Pastoral Search

Jeremiah 3:15 - “Then I will give you shepherds after my own heart, who will lead you with knowledge and understanding.”

The Brady Bunch-style picture above is our Pastoral Search Team. We could have dressed in more formal attire and posed for a professional photograph, but this Zoom screenshot offers a glimpse into what we’ve been up to over the past several months. We are spread across the country, as our snowbirds have migrated north, while a few hardy souls continue to hold down the fort in Tucson. Our communication is held together by what the Lord and the internet have to offer, and so far, we are proclaiming it to be a great success!  What you see above is what we see during our monthly meetings, as we discuss and attempt to discern God’s will in our search for a new pastor.

Our church is located at 8600 N. Camino de Oeste in the northwest region of Tucson, Arizona. This location places us within the Marana School District, near the intersection of Camino de Oeste and W. Cortaro Farms Road. The surrounding area is characterized by a mix of residential neighborhoods and open desert landscapes. The church is easily accessible from major roads, making it convenient for local residents to attend services and events. Nearby, you’ll find a variety of shopping and dining options, including popular favorites like Walmart, Home Depot, Target, and many others. The community around the church offers a peaceful suburban atmosphere, contributing to a welcoming environment for worship and fellowship.

So, why would you want to be the pastor of Cortaro Vista Community Church? We are a small congregation, but we are eager to grow spiritually and engage in the mission of the Church. Our mission statement, “Loving God, Loving Others,” defines and guides us both as people and as Christians. As you explore the links on this page and throughout our website, we sincerely hope you will consider our church as the next stop on your spiritual journey.

Cortaro Vista's History

“Churches are people coming together to worship, to witness, to fellowship, and to serve their God.  We are building Cortaro Vista Community Church with people who are living their faith and who are sharing their journey. You are invited to be a part of building this community.”

So stated the first advertisement to appear in a Tucson, Arizona newspaper announcing the beginning of Cortaro Vista Community Church in 1983.  It was a daughter church plant out of Tucson Reformed Church that had been ministering in Tucson since the 1950’s.  That statement of sharing the journey has been key to the spiritual and physical growth of Cortaro Vista.

Ten years later, after our current Pastor re-started CVCC in 1989, a radio spot with KIIM FM in Tucson declared:

"Hello … I’m Pastor Ted from Cortaro Vista Community Church on Tucson’s Northwest side. The past few days I’ve looked into the starry eyes of a couple who will be married soon, and I’ve held the hand of an elderly 92-year-old woman with Parkinson’s. I’ve had children throw water soaked sponges at me at our annual Fall Festival, and I’ve hugged and cried with a mother and father who had just lost their 22-year-old son.

Cortaro Vista Community Church is about people. People who care for each other, people who support one another, people who understand what it’s like to live life, and people who just plain have fun in their faith. We intentionally live out our Mission Statement: 'Loving God .. Loving Others'.

Life beats us up enough from Monday to Saturday and we don’t need to get beaten up on Sunday again. If you’re looking for an intergenerational, down-to-earth, practical church where the Bible is our foundation and people are important, then come visit us at Cortaro Vista Community Church, where we talk about things like that!”

Over the years we have stayed faithful to our first goal and our Mission Statement. We have consistently tried to help people discover a whole new world where they are loved, cared for, and valued for who they are.

A World Of Real People

Don’t you enjoy being somewhere you can just be yourself?  Somewhere you don’t have to act like somebody you aren’t?  It requires being accepted by others who love you in spite of your flaws.  That’s what God’s love is like and that is the atmosphere we have strived to maintain through our history.  One of the reasons people attend CVCC is because they feel accepted unconditionally. Many over the years were bearing scars and bruises from where life had “beat them up”.  Here they found love and healing and were able to re-enter their own journey.  Our family has fluctuated over the years as those who needed healing entered and then rejoined the mission and life God had called them to.  One of the CVCC family said, “For three years I’ve been looking for a church to call home.  Cortaro Vista feels like home to me, and has ever since the first Sunday. I have met some wonderful spiritual friends that had been missing from my life”.

A World Of Encouragement

Encouragement .. it’s just like a glass of cold water on a steamy, hot Tucson summer day. But sometimes, it seems as rare as the proverbial desert oasis. At Cortaro Vista we have always attempted to offer that glass of cold water to those who were feeling thirsty for some real encouragement. Our history has proved that we believe that God’s Word is an ever-flowing spring of cool water. Home bible studies began early and strong application-based Biblical preaching/teaching helped pave the way for the spiritual growth of CVCC.  The emphasis on encouragement in the midst of the diversity of God’s people and the diversity of life’s journey has been the foundation for our worship gatherings, Bible studies, and family life activities.  CVCC has truly taken on the moniker of an ever-growing family.  From the half-dozen who remained faithful and restarted the church right down to the present gathering of “family” for fellowship or worship, our connectedness has been an important factor in our growth and our outreach.  This testimony came from one of our members, “Cortaro Vista offers a Christ-centered environment where: a variety of needs can be met; friends can be made; a Worship Celebration experience can be challenging, exciting and stimulating; and ministry is genuine.”

A World Of Hope

It doesn’t take long to learn that one of the greatest joys in life comes when we invest our lives in others.  After meeting for a few years at DeGrazia Elementary School it was time for us to be in our own building.  With funding through the Reformed Church’s Partnership In Mission Program, and a comprehensive cross-country fundraising campaign, we were able to build our current building debt free and pay off our land.  Once we had a firm foundation, it was time for us to cease “being the mission” and start supporting missions.  Our intentional mission-oriented outreach provided growth for the congregation and funding for several missions.  Currently around 30% of our giving goes to missions at home and around the globe.   One of our Elders said it best, “Cortaro Vista offers us the opportunity to make a difference in people’s lives; to show by our words and actions that God loves the world, loves them and that we matter to Him.”

There you have it, a small glimpse into the history of what makes Cortaro Vista Community Church such a great place to worship, fellowship, grow spiritually and reach out to others.  We truly believe that the foundation God has allowed us to lay will be the catalyst to move us forward into the future.

Why Tucson?

Tucson, Arizona is a vibrant desert city that draws people in with its unique blend of natural beauty, cultural richness, and relaxed lifestyle. Nestled in the heart of the Sonoran Desert and surrounded by five mountain ranges, Tucson offers stunning views and easy access to outdoor recreation.  Residents love the nearly year-round sunshine - over 300 days of it - which makes it ideal for hiking, biking, and exploring places like Saguaro National Park or Sabino Canyon.

One of Tucson's biggest draws is its laid-back atmosphere paired with a strong sense of community. Despite being the second largest city in Arizona, it maintains a small-town feel where neighborhoods are tight-knit and local businesses are celebrated. The cost of living is relatively affordable compared to other cities in the Southwest, making it attractive to young professionals, retirees, and families alike.  Active adult communities are common here and attract snowbirds from all over the country.

Culturally, Tucson is rich in history and diversity. Its roots are a mix of Native American, Mexican, and Western influences, which are reflected in everything from architecture to cuisine.  The food scene here is especially beloved - Tucson was the first U.S. city designated a UNESCO City of Gastronomy, thanks to its long history and incredible Mexican and Southwestern flavors.

Tucson is also home to the University of Arizona, which brings energy, innovation, and a youthful spirit to the area.  This adds to the growing arts scene, live music venues, and festivals that keep the city buzzing year-round.  For many, Tucson's combination of natural beauty, cultural depth, affordability, and a welcoming vibe make it a very desirable place to live.

Update 7/20/2025

The Pastoral Search Team has been very busy the past few weeks evaluating applications and developing a series of questions to be used during interviews.  On June 28th, we conducted a practice interview with a volunteer pastor.  We feel very comfortable with the interview process now and are ready to ask our questions to an actual applicant.  It is important to note that the interview questions are based on the congregational survey, which defined the wants and needs of the congregation.

At our last meeting, the Search Team evaluated and discussed the application materials we have received. We are currently in the process of scheduling and conducting interviews.  We request that you continue to pray for the Search Team as we attempt to discern the Lord's plan for the future of CVCC.

Update 6/22/2025

For the past several months, the CVCC Pastoral Search Team has been working on a variety of administrative tasks, including developing a church profile, a job description, and an application process. The church profile required a great deal of collaboration with Pastor Ted, as we developed a church history, along with pages describing Cortaro Vista’s missions, ministries, and demographics. These pages are now complete and can be found in the Pastoral Search section of the church website.

The CVCC pastoral job opening has now been posted on various church staffing websites, and applications are beginning to arrive. Interviews should begin in July, with dates to be determined.  Please pray for the Lord’s guidance as the next phase of the search process begins.

Initial Update

Pastor Ted informed us a year ago that he would be retiring at the end of the year 2025. He has been our faithful Pastor/Shepherd since 1989 when he restarted CVCC. We're grateful for his leadership and dedication throughout the years, and now it is time to focus our attention on future ministry and who will lead us.

A Search committee has been selected and has been hard at work since January, 2025.  Barb Furman, Dave and Laura Howe, Lore Jarvis, Alex and Val Renteria and Sandy TenCate have been meeting with our Moderator, Rev. Phil Assink monthly.  Right now, there are many Administrative tasks to move through to get ready to receive applications for our next Pastor/Shepherd.

A Church Profile has been completed and turned in to the Reformed Church In America as well as a job posting that can be accessed through the Reformed Church website at rca.org.  This will give us exposure to all those who are currently seeking Pastoral positions from many denominations.  We will also post our Pastoral opening on other denominational websites.

We have added drop-downs to this page that will have content that a prospective applicant will find helpful. Things like: a brief history of CVCC, some demographics about our congregation and vicinity, ministries here at CVCC (which can be accessed through another page of our website), and a few words about Tucson and what makes it a great place to live, work, and raise a family.  A Job Description is included, as well as an Application Process for those who would like to be considered for our Pastoral opening.

We're on the way, and as Laura Howe, the Co-chair of our Search Team said, "this is a marathon - not a sprint."  You received prayer cards to display in your homes. Please pray daily for the Search Team, the raising up of the candidate that God has to be our next Pastor/Shepherd, and Pastor Ted and CVCC as we continue to minister to the needs of our Tucson Community.
